You wake at Kauri Cliffs to the Pacific filling the window, and nothing about the day asks you to hurry. That is the pace for the fifteen days that follow: six of the finest lodges in the country, north to south, with two or three nights at each, so every place has time to become yours.
The route runs from the Bay of Islands to Auckland, Taupō, Hawke's Bay, the Ahuriri Valley and Queenstown, and the light changes from subtropical to alpine as you go. The days between are chosen, not filled. A helicopter to the summit of Mt Tarawera with the lake district steaming below. A sail on Lake Rotoiti that ends in a hot pool on the shore. Golf at Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers if you play; the estates on foot if you do not. In the south, a morning on a glacier and lunch on a beach no road reaches, both from the air.
