The Coromandel Peninsula juts into the Pacific an hour east of Auckland and feels a world removed from it. This is a place of cathedral forest and empty beaches, where the pohutukawa trees overhang coves of white sand, and the only sound is the tide. Cathedral Cove, accessible only on foot or by water, is one of the most photographed places in New Zealand, and still worth every photograph.
Hot Water Beach is the Coromandel's other great peculiarity: geothermal springs push through the sand at low tide, and you dig your own thermal pool steps from the ocean. But beyond the landmarks, the Coromandel rewards those who slow down. Artists' studios, craft breweries, boutique olive groves, and kayaking through the Hauraki Gulf, this is New Zealand without agenda.
